seven life lessons I was slow to learn.

The best teacher in my life has been life itself. If I had to teach a life course I would have to admit I usually got it wrong.

There will always be people holding up stop signs. You need to make a detour and often find that you end up discovering the new path is a more exciting way to get where you wanted to go in the first place..

My class would include the following life lessons.

  1. Never make a hasty decision on important matters. When I was in nursing school, I met a guy. You know the type, the tall, dark, handsome type, who makes your heart beat fast and makes you giddy with excitement. Before long, he was transferred across the country. He asked me to follow him. I threw my education out the window and moved. It has been 45 years and we are still happily married, but the point is, I gave up my education on a whim. Don’t do that. You will need it.
  2. Make good  friends and keep them. I am the bad example. I have lost good friends through neglect on my part. I have lost the closeness I once had with some and totally lost contact with others.  Do not let them get away. I often feel sad because I do not have a best friend. It is easier to stay in touch in this age, with Facebook and email and all the techy contact we have, however face to face interaction is vital.
  3. Stay humble, forgive and be willing to say you are sorry. Family members hurt each other sometimes. Friends say things. We all make mistakes. Always make an effort to patch things up. Take the initiative to make it right. I have seen too many families torn apart with misunderstandings. Do not be too proud to make the first move.
  4. Set goals.  I mean a lot of goals. These should be flexible but you need to start with what is in your heart. Write out a bucket list. Fill it with your dreams. Big dreams like retiring early and small dreams like learning to ski. I wish I had done that. I never heard of a bucket list when I was young, in fact, it seemed a womans goal back then should be to get married, have children and … ummm… well, that was it. So that is what I did. Years went by, kids grew up and suddenly, there I was, aimlessly going through life, my mission accomplished. Once I crawled out of the depression hole I found myself in, I wrote a bucket list and I am blissfully working towards completing my goals
  5. Do not waste your sunny days.Be adventurous. Be spontaneous. Never stay home because the laundry needs to be done or the lawn needs mowing. We had a lot of fun with our children on the days we jumped in the car to go get groceries and ended up a hundred miles away hiking in the forest, the grocery shopping abandoned, simply because it was a sunny day.

  6. Don’t worry. We all know worry doesn’t change anything. Worry is stressful, it is a waste of time and energy. Most often, we worry about things that will never happen. It is as if we are waiting for the shoe to drop. Think of the times you have worried in the past. What happened? Did it help to worry about it first?  Instead, go for a walk, go shopping, watch a funny movie. Learn to distract yourself. When a crisis does hit your life, and it will, you will somehow find the strength to accept it and deal with it as best you can. Just look at all your options and pray.
  7. Make sure you are happy. That sounds obvious but too many people work at a job they hate, with a boss that expects them to work overtime, leaving them drained and tired. Family life suffers. You suffer. Before it is too late, find another job, go back to school if you have to, but don’t settle for mediocre. Aim to get the job that makes your heart happy. Remember your goals.

I could go on, and I might, but not today, I need to go out and play. Oh, this  is important, maybe it should be number one.. Do not ever think you are too old to PLAY.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Ready

I am always ready to try new things, ready for an adventure. While in Skagway Alaska, Sarah and I decided to go rock-climbing. I had tried it once indoors. Let me just say that the indoor climbing walls are a lot different to the real thing.

We travelled to the climbing site and I got my harness on.

 The company gave us a powder blue helmet to put on. I couldn’t help but feel relief, knowing that when I fall from the top of the cliff, my helmet will save me.

As I placed my fingers on the cold hard rock, I wondered how I will be able to cling to the rock. the ledges were so tiny.

I soon got the hang of it and climbing happened.

I am very proud that I made it to the top, not once but twice, in two different sections. Climbing is hard work. It takes a lot of leg strength to push up each step of the way.

 Repelling back down is the most fun because it takes no strength.

Just lean back and jump your way down.

 I am ready to give it another go. Anyone want to come with me? This is something I want to continue as part of my healthy new lifestyle.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Peaceful


The first evening, the Volendam sailed toward Alaska on the inside passage. We could see the snowy mountains in the distance. I stayed on deck, enjoying the peace in the crisp salty air.
The small islands marched into the distance like shadows fading into the sky.
Just a few other passengers braved the evening air, I felt I had the deck to myself and I was happy to be alone to enjoy the scene in peace.
As the sun sank toward the horizon, it cast a warm glow on the empty deck chairs.
The sky turned from blue to gold, a promise for adventure.


On the quiet deck of the cruise ship I found a wonderful peace. The stress of life slipped away.

Alone on the deck, the evening fell gently and settled like a blanket of peace over my soul.

Time to Review My Bucket List

Some may suggest it is morbid to make a bucket list, thinking of things to do before you die. Make no mistake, I do not plan on keeling over the day after I check off my last item, in fact, my list is continually evolving and changing as I age. I imagine one day, sitting around the nursing home, my list may simply include staying awake while watching TV, or walking to the dining room unaccompanied. I hope I will always have things I want to do because motivation is invigorating and setting goals is motivating.

I have had a bucket list for a long time. It wasn’t formal, I just knew I wanted to do certain things. a few years ago I made a formal list.

I like to dream, I like to plan. I am afraid of wasting my years living a humdrum existence, so I get involved, I volunteer and want to be a better person. Not for others, but simply for me, for my satisfaction.  I find it helps me to know my inner self, my true desires. I have become more aware of who I am. We all have many roles we play, between work and home, with family and friends, the community, socially, at church, we wear many hats and we have expectations placed upon us by others. A bucket list is not about expectations, it is about desires.

I think a bucket list reflects who you are and what is important to you. There are a lot of fun things and adventurous things on my list and I hope some things that will make me grow as a person.

My Day 1 Healthy Dinner is Served

I wanted a simple meal tonight, it is just the two of us. I am not a gourmet cook, in fact, using the word “cook” and “Maggie” in the same sentence usually also includes the word “lousy”. With my resolution to eat healthy, I decided on an omelette.

I chopped some red pepper, sliced some zuccini and celery, and added some chopped bok choy and sauted them all  in a bit of olive oil. Using these colourful veggies, I would cover some of  the vitimins I need for the day. My plan is coming together nicely. My problem is my husband. How do I disguise the “Bok Choy”?  I could hear the words..”What is this green stuff?” said in a most disgruntled tone.  I know that I am “in it to win it”. I am going to eat healthy.  If he wants, he can always make  PB+J sandwiches for himself. It is my resolution after all.

I put the quinoa (keen-wa) on to cook. It cooks just like rice but is far healthier. It is important to get enough fibre and to eat healthy whole grains. Quinoa is a great choice.  In 1/4 cup I will get 3 gms of fibre and 5 gms of protein.

I added a can of cooked tomatoes to the quinoa. Cooked tomatoes contain lycopene, which is one of the most potent antioxidants. Dietary intake of tomatoes and tomato products containing lycopene has been shown to be associated with a decreased risk of chronic diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. I need all the help I can get and I love tomatoes.

I really enjoyed it and yes, he did ask “what is that green stuff”? But, he has a cold and his taste buds are out of service, so he thinks he “likes” bok choy… (yeah I win one.)

My Treasures

I have seven treasures. Each one is unique. Each one is very special. Five of my treasures are grandsons. I spent Sunday afternoon with my two grand-daughters, Emily and Sarah. I decided to enter a photo challenge on the website “I Heart faces”

We had so much fun at our photo shoot, I wanted to share some of the pictures I took of the girls.  Emily and Sarah are both a delight. They are fun-loving, carefree and very lovely girls.
